How the calculation works

Pace, time and distance are linked by one relationship. Know any two and the third follows. The calculator converts everything to kilometres and seconds, solves it, then converts back to the units you chose.

Pace is rounded to the nearest second only when it is displayed. The unrounded value is used for splits, so they do not drift.

pace = time ÷ distance

pace
how long it takes to cover one kilometre or mile
time
the time you ran, in seconds
distance
the distance you ran, in kilometres or miles

Pace per km Pace per mile Speed 5K 10K Half marathon Marathon
4:00 6:26 15.0 km/h 20:00 40:00 1:24:23 2:48:47
5:00 8:03 12.0 km/h 25:00 50:00 1:45:29 3:30:59
6:00 9:39 10.0 km/h 30:00 1:00:00 2:06:35 4:13:10
7:00 11:16 8.6 km/h 35:00 1:10:00 2:27:41 4:55:22

Choosing a realistic pace

Set the target from a recent race or a hard, steady run, not from the pace you wish you could hold. Over a longer distance the same effort gives a slower pace, so a 10K pace is not a half marathon pace. If the result looks too fast or too slow for you, the calculator flags values outside what is humanly plausible so you can check your inputs.

Frequently asked questions

What pace do I need for a 4-hour marathon?

About 5:41 per kilometre or 9:09 per mile, held evenly over 42.195 km.

How do I convert pace per mile to pace per kilometre?

Divide the pace per mile by 1.609344. For example 8:00 per mile is 4:58 per kilometre. Use the unit selector on the pace field and the calculator shows both.

Does this account for hills, heat or wind?

No. It assumes the same pace from start to finish. Real races are rarely even, so treat the splits as a guide, not a prediction.

What is the difference between pace and speed?

Pace is time per distance (minutes per kilometre). Speed is distance per time (kilometres per hour). Runners usually think in pace, treadmills show speed, and this calculator shows both.
