Pace converter
Convert between speed in km/h or mph and pace in minutes per kilometre or mile. The result updates as you type.
How the calculation works
Pace is the time it takes to cover a distance; speed is the distance covered in a time. They are two ways to say the same thing, so one is the reciprocal of the other: pace in minutes per kilometre is 60 divided by speed in kilometres per hour.
Miles are converted with the exact value 1.609344 km per mile. Results are rounded only for display, never in between.
pace (min per km) = 60 ÷ speed (km/h)
- pace
- minutes it takes to cover one kilometre
- speed
- kilometres covered in one hour
Treadmill speed and pace
Common treadmill speeds and the pace they correspond to:
| Speed (km/h) | Pace (/km) | Pace (/mile) | Speed (mph) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 | 7:30 | 12:04 | 4.97 |
| 9 | 6:40 | 10:44 | 5.59 |
| 10 | 6:00 | 9:39 | 6.21 |
| 11 | 5:27 | 8:47 | 6.84 |
| 12 | 5:00 | 8:03 | 7.46 |
| 13 | 4:37 | 7:26 | 8.08 |
| 14 | 4:17 | 6:54 | 8.70 |
| 15 | 4:00 | 6:26 | 9.32 |
| 16 | 3:45 | 6:02 | 9.94 |
Pace or speed?
Runners usually plan and talk in pace, because it maps straight onto race distances and splits. Treadmills, cycling computers and fitness watches often show speed. A treadmill at 1% incline roughly matches outdoor effort at the same pace, so use a small incline for a fair comparison with road running.

Frequently asked questions
How do I convert km/h to min/km?
Divide 60 by the speed. 12 km/h is 60 ÷ 12 = 5 minutes per kilometre, which is 5:00 /km.
How do I convert min/km to km/h?
Convert the pace to minutes (5:30 is 5.5 minutes) and divide 60 by it. 60 ÷ 5.5 is about 10.91 km/h.
How do I convert min/km to min/mile?
Multiply by 1.609344. A pace of 5:00 per kilometre is 8:03 per mile.
What treadmill speed is a 5:00 per km pace?
12 km/h, or about 7.46 mph. Most treadmills show speed in km/h or mph, so this converter is handy for setting a target pace.
